Mike Brisiel Signs With Oakland Raiders

by David Coleman • Mar 17, 2012 10:18 AM CDT

That’s the word that broke Friday. Brisiel is apparently getting a five-year, $20 million contract from the Raidas, as Oakland tries to revamp its offensive line under new head coach Dennis Allen.

It’s weird to think that Brisiel would get this kind of deal, though as Rivers said in the post above at Battle Red Blog, the reputation of the Texans‘ offensive line could have as much to do with this as anything. Brisiel is not one of the top guards in football, but he’s paid to be now.

With this, Andre Caldwell will presumably be the starer at right guard. I don’t know about you, but this worries me. When Caldwell played for Brisiel this year, he looked like a non-ideal fit in the zone scheme. Specifically, it seemed to me that he struggled in getting to the second level to engage linebackers, which isn’t a small thing.

Which makes me wonder if Houston will look for a guard early in the draft to compete with him. Even though I’d love David DeCastro to fall that far, I don’t see it happening, which means Houston would have to start looking for value later on.

Tough, tough exodus out of Houston right now. I guess a tight salary cap can do that to the best of teams.
